At the November meeting of Shropshire Installed Masters’ Lodge 6262 the guest speaker was W Bro. Ian Simpson from Essex (pictured with WM Ron Gee and PrGM Peter Taylor), who gave an extended and excellent talk on “Freemasonry and Prisoners of War”. Ian has given his talk over 80 times, and his assurance allowed him to speak without notes and in a most entertaining manner to the large meeting of Shropshire Brethren. During the course of the talk he gave a vivid account of the conditions in which Brethren often found themselves, the dangers they faced if identified as Freemasons by the Nazis or Japanese, the involved manner in which the Lodges were tyled, and demonstrated that in the most extreme situations the Masonic principles of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth enabled the men to support one another, help those still less fortunate than themselves, and maintain their self-respect in adversity. On one occasion ‘behind the wire’ the Lodge was closed shortly before the members escaped!
